Behind the goals by
Alan Johnson
Hednesford 5 Altrincham 0
Nationwide Conference
5 February 2000
After 14 games in four months without defeat, defeat was inevitable at some stage especially because Altrincham had been pushing their luck during several games and had only managed a draw by scoring in the last few minutes. It was the enormity of the loss and the way that Altrincham played that caused the most concern. The fans behind the goal who are pretty good judges of a football match were silenced after Hednesford's second goal because they realized that with the way Alty were playing there was no way the 14 match run without a defeat would be continuing.
The Pitman on the other hand knew what they were doing, were positive in their approach, tackled and passed well, knew that the oppositions goal was ahead ,and made and took chances. Alty did not do any of these they played as though they were unsure of what to do next and suffered the consequences
During the season one or more player has the inevitable off day and the rest of the team can cover but in this case the whole team including the substitutes were not at their best.
The team was the same as on Tuesday. It was surprising that Kevin Ellison was selected as he is reported to be carrying an injury and this may have been confirmed when he was substituted for Andy Lovelock on only 41 minutes. Gavin Price was brought off after 60 minutes when he seemed most likely to score and was replaced by Richard Landon. Mark Maddox was changed for Phil Power .None of the substitutes made a serious impact on Altrincham's overall performance and the goal rout continued.
There were 1193 at this game and from 1.45pm to 2.30pm Alty supporters comprised 90% of the customers in the superb social club bar which overlooks the pitch making a substantial contribution to the profits of the bar. The match was non segregated in an excessive way the stewards defending the right of a few Hednesford supporters only a few feet away from the Alty fans to taunt and wind up the visiting fans. This is not my concept of segregation which allows free movement of fans to behind the opposition goal but keeps the opposing fans at a distance
Before the match there was a one minute's silence in memory of Martin Aldridge, the on-loan forward at Nationwide Conference side Rushden & Diamonds, who died on Sunday following injuries sustained in a car accident. The 25-year old, had joined the club on a three-month loan from Blackpool shortly before Christmas.
There was little indication in the first few minutes of the goal flood which was to come. Hednesford were more in control and Altrincham uncertain of what to do next.
On 15 minutes a good cross from new signing Martin Norburyand with whom Alty had no answer for, found Ged Timmins who headed home.
On 39 minutes Neil Davis scored The Pitman's second 0-2.
On 41 minutes Andy Lovelock replaced Kevin Ellison
Hednesford third goal came on 59 minutes from Micky Norbury after a unfettered free run straight for the goal
The nearest Alty came to scoring a goal was when Andy Lovelock's free kick hit the cross bar but keeper Mark Wilson had very little to do through out the game
The 4th goal came on 78 minutes from Ian Robinson and Hednesford were having a field day. Their final and 5th goal came on 89 minutes again from Ian Robinson.
Altrincham fans who had been calling for the referee Mr Prosser to blow his whistle to end the slaughter were pleased when he did.
0-5 is bad enough but it could have been worse if Dean Greygoose and not pulled off at least three good saves.
Altrincham had no answer to Micky Norbury who was a constant thorn in their side and he was made man of the Match
It was very quiet on the coach going home!
It is hoped that this is a one off blip and that Altrincham will resume its normal form in the Nationwide Mcmillan Cup game against Telford on Tuesday and more importantly the Nationwide Conference game against Welling on Saturday, both of these matches to be played at Moss Lane .

Hednesford Town 5 v 0 Altrincham

Robins suffered a bad day at the office on Saturday, going down to their heaviest defeat since returning to the Conference. A 5-0 thrashing brought the 13 league match unbeaten run to an end, and the only consolation is that the result simply used up one of Alty’s games in hand.
Although Robins do not drop any closer to the basement, a good opportunity to make up ground on the teams above was lost as most of their rivals were engaged on FA Trophy duty. The task facing manager Bernard Taylor and his backroom staff is to use Tuesday night’s Macmillan Trophy semi-final clash against Telford to make sure any hangovers from the trip to Keys Park are well and truly wiped away.
Unfortunately for Taylor, injuries have stripped his squad to the bare bones. At Hednesford, the continued absences of Shaun Goodwin, Keith Russell, Stuart Coburn and Brendan Burke, with Phil Power not yet at full fitness, meant that everyone available was named in an un-changed team. One boost, however, is that Russell may be available for Saturday’s six-pointer against Welling at Moss Lane.
The line-up wasn’t the only element of continuity from last Tuesday’s 3-3 draw against Telford. Robins never played after half time in that match, and the same was the case at Hednesford, who themselves were in the middle of a bad run. This was one of those days when nothing went right; the hosts won every 50:50 ball and free kick awards one-sided from the referee. Mr Prosser heads the Conference table for yellow cards, and consolidated that un-enviable record with eight more bookings – four for each side – in a game that could not boast a bad tackle.
Perhaps the loyal and vocal band of Robins’ fans who again made the trip outside Cheshire should have expected the worst when Chris Timons and Jason Gallagher were booked within a minute of each other over the same free kick. The Pitmen could not make the most of that opportunity, but did not squander the next one, which arose on 15 minutes. Alty have not been cutting out crosses of late, but when Mick Norbury’s centre came in, there were red faces all round as Ged KIMMINS was left un-marked on the edge of the six yard box with time to beat Greygoose. 0-1.
Had Leroy Chambers been able to convert Alty’s best chance of the match thirty seconds later, then the course of this match might have been very different. Instead, Chambers’ lunging effort landed the wrong side of Wilson’s left hand post from Ellison’s cross. This was the only glimpse of Ellison’s undoubted quality all afternoon, the player’s obvious ankle injury preventing him from playing a full part and causing his eventual substitution five minutes before the interval.
By that time, Alty were two goals down. Maddox’s back header lacked the pace to reach Greygoose, and Neil DAVIS nipped in between the pair to convert the gifted chance from 12 yards although Greygoose did save his initial effort. 0-2.
Any chance Robins had of recovering the deficit disappeared on 58 minutes. Hednesford’s Stuart Airdrie had already missed a good chance and Davis had seen a dipping volley just clear the bar when they capitalised on Alty pushing men forward. NORBURY was left in too much space and he had time aplenty to find the net from just inside the penalty area. 0-3.
Robins had already introduced Richard Landon for Gavin Price and Andy Lovelock for Ellison, and replied to the third Hednesford goal by swapping Power for Maddox , but still the agony was to piled on. On 77 minutes, another ball in from the Altrincham left found Ian ROBINSON, and he showed good skill to roll the ball under his right foot and fire a low shot past Greygoose with his left. 0-4.
On a day which most, if not all of the Moss Lane squad will want to forget – and quickly – Andy Lovelock and Phil Power both made good contributions when they came on, and Lovelock might have snatched a brace. His first effort found the side netting on 82 minutes, and a second clipped the bar a couple of minutes later. But there was to be no consolation goal, and a four goal hiding became five in the last minute, ironically such a productive spell in most recent matches for Alty.
On this occasion the tables were turned as ROBINSON notched his second. His 20 yard run was not stopped by a single Alty tackle, but his shot was weak. Dean Greygoose somehow allowed the ball to squirm under his body and trickle over the line. 0-5 and the entire afternoon summarised in a single incident.
ALTRINCHAM: Greygoose, Hodson, Adams, Maddox (sub. Power 59 mins), Talbot, Timons, Gallagher, Hawes, Chambers, Price (sub. Landon 55 mins), Ellison (sub. Lovelock 40 mins)
