SUMMARY
In a match played in incessant, heavy rain the players of both sides served
up an entertaining match which the home side were fortunate to win. The
pitch held up well to the downpour and allowed Altrincham to play their
passing game. As so often this season Altrincham contrived to hit the goal
framework on several occasions but were beaten by a somewhat messy goal; a
low in-swinging freekick which seemed at most to get a slight touch from a
Northwich player as it continued its trajectory into the far corner of
Coburn's net. So, although Altrincham went out of the Cheshire Senior Cup,
they did so with their pride intact and Mark Ward will probably not lose too
much sleep over a result which will ease the fixture schedule.
TEAM NEWS
Altrincham were without leading scorer Kevin Ellison, rumoured to have flu,
and as expected both Mark Ward and Jason Gallagher were forced to sit the
game out with the injuries they picked up at Worksop. Leroy Chambers
returned to the side and Ian Craney started the match rather than being on
the bench. Young Otis Thomas, the Reserves' striker got his first-team
debut, initially on the bench. For the Vics, Jimmy Quinn was cup-tied by
dint of having turned out for Nantwich in their nine-nil drubbing by Crewe
in the preliminary round of this competition. The injured Colin Rose was
reduced to the role of sub.

On a very wet evening the only picture worth recording was
that of the ball about to go into the Northwich goal. This was the view of
the Alty faithful behind the goal but not the view of the referee. What
the other bright blob is I know not. When the rain on my cap started
dripping on the camera I decided it was time to give up. No more evening
photographs until the spring! |
