BACKGROUND

This match had been postponed from 29 December 2001. Alty arrived looking for a first-ever league win over the Bishops, whilst the hosts were also desperate to win after a four month run without a league victory. The game was played in dry weather on a good surface for the time of year. The Bishops are still coming to terms with the loss of manager Tony Lee to Spennymoor United over the Christmas period.

SUMMARY

An injury ravaged Alty side gave a good account of themselves despite losing this game. Trailing by two goals at the interval Alty could only pull one goal back through Furlong, early in the second half despite having a lot of possession and playing down the slope.

TEAM NEWS

With injuries to Kevin Hulme and Gary Scott and with captain Steve Hawes suffering from a cold, Alty's already much weakened squad was supplemented tonight by three Youth players, Mario Daniel, Lee Thompson and Vernum Rowland all of whom started on the bench. All were involved in a league match for the first time this season. In all, eight first-teamers were missing: Scott, Adams, Gallagher, Murphy, Shuttleworth, Hawes, Hulme and Taylor. As the Reserves also had a game last night that, too, must have restricted selection. Bishops' Carl Chillingsworth was injured in the warm up and replaced by Neil Robinson.

Last week I said that the flood lights at Droylsden were the worst we had seen this season and I was right but we had not been to Bishop Auckland, they now hold that record. Although the camera I use I have will take pictures under decent flood lights it could not cope with those at Bishop.

However as there is a strong possibility that Bishop Auckland will move from this ground next season so it was worth recording a few shots which illustrate the quaintness of the ground.

This is at the far end which and is not available for spectators and neither is half of the Social Club because of the need to protect the cricket pitch

Was this the last goal scored by the Bishops against Altrincham on this ground?
It was good to see three youth players in the squad as substitutes. Here Mario Daniel waits for a corner kick
