BACKGROUND
The UniBond League had postponed the league match against Marine scheduled for tonight to give Altrincham, their sole remaining FA Cup representatives, a free midweek. However, a 1-1 draw at the Crown Ground last Saturday meant that Altrincham had to play this Trophy replay instead. Stanley came into the match unbeaten in nine games - but their last defeat had been against today's opponents, Altrincham, at Moss Lane.
SUMMARY
This game only ended around 10.30pm after extra time had yielded no goals to add to Hargreaves's header for Alty (66 mins) and James's reply for Stanley (76 mins). Cavanagh had a penalty superbly saved by Coburn after 88 minutes. In the shoot-out Thornley and Sertori had their penalties saved, but Craney, who had also missed, was allowed to retake his effort and scored. Swannick also scored cleanly before Poland kept his nerve with the clinching spot-kick. Only goalkeeper Speare scored for Stanley from the spot; Cavanagh missed again (saved), as did Bell (wide) and Carden (saved). Stuart Coburn, who saved one penalty in the game and two more in the shoot out, was Man of the Match.
TEAM NEWS

Altrincham were unchanged from Saturday's game at Accrington, but the visitors brought in Paul Burns for Steve Flitcroft. Carl Furlong warmed up with the Alty team for the first time since his bad injury at Witton but was not named in the Altrincham squad. Again Alty took the risk of not including a goalkeeper in their five substitutes.
